Hoarder Homes

3/5/2018 (Permalink)

Hoarder Homes are tricky, and no two houses are identical.

The key to cleaning a hoarder's house is understanding the total amount of work to be completed. This includes the job hazards, the time frame to complete the project, and the different components of the job.

Depending on the situation, the client may want a complete clean out, a re-organization and sterilization, Air duct cleaning, carpet cleaning, and other home repairs.

Other times, there may be only a portion of the job that the client desires to be completed.

Here are the steps to Cleaning and Organizing a Hoarder Home....

Itemize: Each and every job is different. Some customers only want debris removed. Be careful and safe in what you are removing.  Most times there is only one way in and out of the home, make sure to make a clear area in another room so there is always 2 ways to get out in an emergency.

Prepare a Staging Area:  Staging areas are needed to make sure you know what content is being kept as well as thrown away or donated. Many times there is no room in home so if there is a designated outdoor space this could be very helpful.

Identifying Where To take Debris and Trash Removal: Many jobs require a large amount of debris to be removed. Once the debris has been removed from the home it is critical to remove from the property to avoid the customer from rummaging and bringing things back in the home. Using dumpsters for large jobs is suggested.

Once all the content and garbage is removed from the home and all that is left is the remaining things that  will stay in home the home will need to be cleaned and disinfected with proper cleaning products

We at SERVPRO of Piscataway try to make this as painless as possible knowing that getting rid of items and personnel things can be difficult for some.

Please give us a call if you need any help in the Clean up process of your home.

Spring cleaning time

2/7/2018 (Permalink)

As we are all ready to get rid of these cold and frigid months.

Here comes Spring Cleaning time.

Some might see it as getting rid of clutter others might think it’s a total pain…But keep in mind it is not ONLY about cleaning the contents in your  home.

It is also time to check electrical devices and outdoor products for safety.

We talk a lot about fire safety during the fall and winter, which makes sense given all the indoor and outdoor fires, space heaters, and holiday lights that tend to show up when it’s cold.

But now that it’s getting warmer, there are still plenty of ways to make sure fire protection is in your spring cleaning routine.

We at SERVPRO of Piscataway would like to share some tips in helping out in this process

  1. Make sure your smoke and carbon dioxide monitors are blown out for the dust that could have collected over the winter months. Also it is good to perform a monthly check by pressing the test button assuring the batteries are good.
  2. The leading cause of fires caused in home is the Clothes Dryer and failure to clean them. So as many people think “I will clean lint trap on the next load” it is important to make sure it is cleaned each and every dry cycle. Also check the drum to make sure excess lint has not fallen in. Make sure the dryer area is clear of flammable products such as cleaning products  and cardboard boxes.
  3. Nothing says Spring and Summer quite like “Grilling” Make sure you clean your grill very well in between uses for less grease fires that can occur if not properly cleaned, always check drip pan for excess grease.  Before you turn on grill check that all connections are secure and that there are no frayed connection wires.  If you turn on your tank and smell “GAS” immediately turn tank off.  If using a charcoal grill make sure the coals are completely cooled down and throw away in a metal container.
